As an IT consultant, collaborating with clients, time is always my enemy. There have been countless occasions where I wish I had a script to collect this data or a script to carry out that task, but the time to create, test, and deploy that script is usually outside the time I have available. So, I default to the proverbial “manual process” to accomplish the task.

With the creation of Agentic AI, this has all changed. If you have an account with Anthropic or OpenAI, to name two, you now can create code in minutes vs days. The slang term for this is “vibe coding” or just “vibing”.

What is Agentic AI

If you ask ChatGPT what Agentic AI is, you get the following:

Agentic AI refers to an artificial intelligence system that doesn’t just respond to commands, but can act with initiative, autonomy, and adaptability to achieve a goal. Unlike traditional automation (where you write a script once and it executes exactly as written), Agentic AI can generate, refine, and even execute scripts dynamically based on high-level intent and the current operational environment.

What all this really means is you now have a coder assistant that can speak almost every language, follow best practices, and it documents everything, in your back pocket. Your assistant just needs direction or a definition of what you would like to create, optimize or convert.

What is required for an Agentic AI assistant?

To use Agentic AI, you will need the following tools:

· Code Editor – I prefer VS Code, but there are others in the market that you can use.

· AI Developer Assistant – I prefer Cline but there are other in the market like GitHub Copilot.

· AI Provider – The AI developer assistant will dictate the platform choices you have available. Cline provides various models for you to choose from ranging from Anthropic, OpenAI, GCC Vertex, and many more.

Once you have the code editor and AI assistant installed, the next step is to create your account with your chosen AI provider. Once that account is created, you can generate your API Key and configure Cline. The longest part of this entire process is deciding which software you will use.

Getting Started

Here is the fun part. In the Cline chat window, you can define your language(s), describe/define your project, and hit enter. The AI assistant will build out its interpretation of your request. Once complete the most important thing to do next is TEST the new script. Most of the time, there will be some additional refinements needed. If you run into errors, just reference the script name, paste the error you received and ask it to fix the problem. That’s it…

Here are a few Tips and Tricks

· Always adhere to organizational standards around AI use.

· Think about your project before you start typing in that chat window. Try to be as concise as possible.

· Read the summary that is created when you submit your project definition. Answer any questions the AI Assistant has or correct the AI assistants’ understanding of your project requirements.

· Customize your interaction with Cline by creating client rules. Simple things like “use this path for all new scripts” or “only use factual coding methods”.  The latter will cut down on AI hallucinations.

· Always validate/test your scripts before putting them to use. The AI providers are not perfect the first time around. I will usually get coding errors on the first draft. To solve this issue, you just reference the script, paste the error and ask it to fix the problem.

· The use of an AI provider is not free. In most cases you will spend under $1.00 to build simple script. Building complex applications can be a lot more expensive.

· Yes, you can build code in languages you don’t understand, but being able to read and understand the scripts being created is a necessity, specifically in a professional situation.

· If you are trying to build a larger application, define your project in advance and break it up into smaller pieces. This will save you time overall.

· Last, but not least, Have Fun! Coding with an AI Assistant allows YOUR ideas to take shape.

Summary

Agentic AI is the next wave to boost IT operational productivity. No longer do you need to spend hours building simple scripts to accomplish tasks. The use of an AI Assistant allows engineers to build and test those scripts in less than 30 minutes.  What was once nice to have is now just a chat window away. You just need to define your parameters and let your AI buddy build your ideas.
